Unbeknownst to many, Spyderco has developed a rustproof blade and named the knife Salt 1. The blade is made of H-1 Steel which according to this article, is ”impervious to corrosion.” Apparently, the alloy’s secret is the nitrogen. The nitrogen has replaced the carbon, present in most other blades, which normally reacts with chlorine in the oxidation process.

I was under the impression Stainless Steel was rustproof. Many blades are made out of stainless steel – is this just a marketing gimmick? or am I missing something?

According to the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (click for article) it cannot rust.
Has anyone out there had their stainless steel blades rust on them? Was it an actual stainless steel blade or some other alloy/variation? What was it being used for? Post your comments below.
